About This Hike

A glacier walk you can do in an afternoon

The Chalaadi Glacier sits above 2800 meters in the Upper Svaneti region of Georgia, carved into the mountain by the Mestiachala river valley. It's one of the most accessible glaciers in the Caucasus - no technical experience needed, no ropes, no special gear. Just a clear trail through forest that opens up into one of the more dramatic glacial landscapes you'll find this close to a mountain town.

The hike starts at the bridge over the Mestiachala river, about 30 minutes from Mestia by car. From there the trail follows the river upstream through dense forest, climbing steadily until the trees thin out and the glacier comes into view - a wide mass of ice descending from the base of Mount Ushba (4710m).

At the glacier snout you can walk right up to the ice. There's time to explore, take photos, and sit with the view before heading back down the same trail. The return is easier and faster than the ascent.

The tour runs in the afternoon - in summer around 5 PM, earlier in shoulder season. The light in the valley at that hour is worth it.

What the Chalaadi Glacier actually looks like

River, ice, rocks. This short clip was filmed on the trail - so you know exactly what you're signing up for before you book.

The glacier is bigger in person. But this gives you a good idea of the terrain, the light, and the scale of what's at the end of the trail.

How the Hike Goes

FAQ

Chalaadi Glacier Hike - common questions

How difficult is the Chalaadi hike?
Easy to moderate. The trail follows a clear forest path with a steady uphill climb - nothing technical, no scrambling or exposed sections. Most reasonably fit people handle it comfortably, including older travelers and teenagers. The descent is easier than the ascent. Wear proper footwear - trail runners or hiking boots, not sandals.
Why does the tour start in the afternoon?
The timing is intentional. The Mestiachala valley gets beautiful afternoon light, the trail is cooler, and there are fewer people around. In summer (June-August) we typically depart around 5:00 PM - you're back in Mestia before dark. In September and October the days are shorter, so departure moves earlier to around 3:00 PM. We confirm the exact time when you book.
Can I combine Chalaadi with Ushguli or Koruldi?
Yes - and it works well. Both Ushguli and Koruldi are morning tours that finish by early afternoon, which leaves enough time for Chalaadi in the same day. Just tell us when you book and we'll coordinate the timing. It's a full day but a manageable one - neither tour is particularly strenuous.
Will there be time to take photos at the glacier?
Yes - we build that in. At the glacier snout you can walk right up to the ice, explore the area, and take your time with photos. We don't rush the glacier stop. It's the whole point of the hike.
What's the difference between shared and private?
Shared: you join a small group in a shared car, fixed departure time, 70 GEL per person. Guide included. Private: the vehicle is yours - your group, your pace, full flexibility. 250 GEL for the vehicle (up to 7 people). For larger groups we can arrange multiple vehicles.
How do I book the Chalaadi Glacier Hike?
Book directly via WhatsApp or Instagram - we usually reply within a few minutes. Direct booking gives you a better price.
