The Chalaadi Glacier sits above 2800 meters in the Upper Svaneti region of Georgia, carved into the mountain by the Mestiachala river valley. It's one of the most accessible glaciers in the Caucasus - no technical experience needed, no ropes, no special gear. Just a clear trail through forest that opens up into one of the more dramatic glacial landscapes you'll find this close to a mountain town.
The hike starts at the bridge over the Mestiachala river, about 30 minutes from Mestia by car. From there the trail follows the river upstream through dense forest, climbing steadily until the trees thin out and the glacier comes into view - a wide mass of ice descending from the base of Mount Ushba (4710m).
At the glacier snout you can walk right up to the ice. There's time to explore, take photos, and sit with the view before heading back down the same trail. The return is easier and faster than the ascent.
The tour runs in the afternoon - in summer around 5 PM, earlier in shoulder season. The light in the valley at that hour is worth it.
River, ice, rocks. This short clip was filmed on the trail - so you know exactly what you're signing up for before you book.
The glacier is bigger in person. But this gives you a good idea of the terrain, the light, and the scale of what's at the end of the trail.
Start time varies by season. In summer (June-August) we typically depart around 5:00 PM - the afternoon light in the valley is excellent and the trail is cool. In September-October departure is earlier, around 3:00 PM. We'll confirm the exact time when you book.
We pick you up in Mestia at the agreed time. The drive to the trailhead takes about 30 minutes along the Mestiachala river road.
The hike begins at the bridge over the Mestiachala river. Your guide introduces the route and the landscape you're walking into.
The path follows the river through dense forest, gradually climbing. The trail is well-marked and easy to follow. As the forest opens up, the glacier comes into view ahead.
You reach the glacier snout at over 2800m. Walk up close to the ice, see the meltwater streams below, and look back at the valley you just walked through. Time to take photos - no rushing here.
The descent is faster and easier. The forest trail back to the bridge takes about an hour at a relaxed pace.
